Expert shares how you can avoid and repair damaged hair
From styling to colouring, UV exposure and humidity, our hair goes through a lot of hardship. And that’s why every now and then we find ourselves having to deal with split ends, dry and dull tresses.
For those who are looking to transform their dry strands into silky and soft ones, Dove Expert, Kirti Sharma has shared her top tips on how you can prevent and repair damaged hair.
1. Control the temperature of your hair tools
We all love a curling iron, blow dryer or a flat iron but using heat appliances daily, can lead to dryness and breakage as it changes the structure of the proteins that are contained in our hair. When possible, let your hair air dry after washing it and style it without a heat too. On the days you need to use a blow dryer, curling iron or flat iron, make sure you turn down the heating setting and apply a heat protector to prevent hair damage.
2. Wash wisely
Select a shampoo and a conditioner that is formulated for damaged hair. Dove offers the Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner which is created with Smart Target Damage Repair technology that precisely repairs recurring daily damage, prevents breakage, and provides deep nourishment for your hair. When washing your hair, make sure the water is lukewarm, then, to finish off the process rinse your hair with cool water to close the hair cuticle. This process will add shine to the hair and seal the moisture in.
3. Switch to a silk pillowcase
Seeping on a silk pillowcase can prevent your hair from breakage and damage as it reduces friction between your hair and the pillow. Cotton, on the other hand, leads to more friction and absorbs moisture from the hair, while silk will leave the moisture in. So, if you suffer from dry strands or flaky scalp, a silk pillowcase will be very beneficial to you.
4. Brush with care
Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet, instead, use specific products to detangle the hair. One tip is to brush the hair before the shower to decrease the likelihood of breakage. When brushing your hair, always start from the ends and work your way up while holding the section that you are working on. On the days that you don’t have much time and need to brush your hair straight after the shower, you can use a leave-in product and do it gently.
5.Trim your split ends
Split ends are one of the most common hair complaints. When the hair’s cuticle gets damaged and begins to wear off, a delicate inner layer of the hair gets exposed, which leads to dehydration and weakness, causing split ends. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to repair split ends but to prevent them from getting out of control, you should visit your hairdresser for regular trims. Your hairdresser can simply trim the ends, which will help to strength the hair, resulting in a healthy-looking.
